By the mid-1940s Dalí’s Surrealism was becoming a little too pat and predictable. Although there are undoubtedly memorable images here — the elephant with extended legs is a supremely imaginative conceit — nonetheless there are not enough such fancies to push the work . . . beyond mere illustration.
